These are images from hikes up and down rivers. These are all hikes without tracks - just following the river and setting up camp wherever and whenever I can find enough space. In fact sometimes I don't even take a tent because just a tarp is more practical and then all I need is enough space for a sleeping bag. Exploring the valleys and doing interesting side trips along the way. I am not going to say what rivers these are because some of these hikes are quite risky and remote and also because I want to keep them to myself. Some of these rivers are undoubtedly visited by other hikers because I have seen traces.
On one river in Victoria I I walked for two days down a river and stumbled across a major encampment with frames for tarps, camp furniture and all kinds of tools, implements and other bits and pieces. I then walked another two days to the nearest four wheel drive track. It was probably set up by deer hunters or fishermen - but how did they get all that junk there?
But some river hikes I have been doing for years without ever seeing the slightest trace of any one else. I'm sure someone must do the same hikes on occasion but it's very nice to think I am the only one!
